Oracle sows fear, and uncertainty and doubt in the MySQL database product by restricting the newly minted Classic Edition to the old and clunky MyISAM engine. And from the looks of the MySQL website, that's the only free version available! Egad!
Though it seems as if the world is about to end and that Oracle is destroying the free MySQL server, looks can be deceiving. The 'Classic' edition is NOT the free MySQL that we have all grown to love! The MySQL Community Edition is free as in beer and permits the use of the sleek Innodb engine. A proliferation of high speed, simple web servers (node.js,nginx,lighttpd,sxe,...) is changing the web application game rapidly. The choices between GOOD platforms are amazing, and these high performance servers have contributed greatly to the viability of many of the new functional language platforms.
